Fox News: Vance courts disaffected Trump voters ahead of 2028

After the midterms, Vance blamed Republican losses on the Iran war. Fox News interprets his remarks as an effort to attract disillusioned Trump voters.

US Vice President JD Vance is seeking to unite disaffected supporters of Donald Trump ahead of a possible 2028 presidential bid. Fox News Digital reports this, citing administration sources, following Republican losses in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections.

According to Fox News, Vance posted an assessment of the party’s defeat on X on the morning of November 4, identifying the Iran war as its main cause. He argued that turnout was not the only problem: some voters who supported the Trump–Vance ticket in 2024 had now voted Democratic. This is the vice president’s assessment, not an established sole explanation for the election results.

Before the vote, Vance presented the upcoming midterms as a referendum on “common sense versus pure unadulterated crazy,” Fox News reports.

In the post quoted by the outlet, Vance listed four tasks proposed by an unnamed pollster: end the Iran war, focus on the cost of living and inflation, return to the America First principle, and change relations with Israel. He thus endorsed these priorities, but this does not amount to an announced presidential campaign platform.

An administration official speaking to Fox News interprets this as an appeal to the “new right”: supporters of Trump’s original agenda who oppose US involvement in foreign conflicts and are unhappy with his closeness to Israel. According to that official, Vance is not seeking a complete break with the president: he wants to attract people who support Trump but disagree with his foreign policy.

An internal White House meeting on November 4 described by the outlet received differing explanations: one source linked it to coordinating the administration’s post-election messaging, while another called it a regular senior staff meeting. At the time of publication, the White House had not answered Fox News’ request for comment on the meeting and Vance’s remarks. Meanwhile, in a separate report, Fox News says Trump called the explanation linking the losses to the Iran war largely true, but continued to defend the decision to take military action.

Fox News considers Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio potential contenders for the Republican nomination in 2028. However, in an interview with Mark Halperin released before the midterms, Vance said he was still unsure whether he would run. He expected Trump’s endorsement if he did, but did not know whether it would come immediately. The current reports therefore describe possible political positioning, not a campaign launch that has already taken place.
