Sergio Gor denies interest in Rubio’s job after media report

The Washington Sun named the US ambassador to India as a possible Rubio successor. Gor, the State Department and the White House rejected the report about his career plans.

US ambassador to India Sergio Gor has rejected suggestions that he is interested in replacing Marco Rubio as secretary of state. His denial appears in The Washington Sun’s November 4, 2026 report, which was recirculated on Telegram on November 5 without this significant detail. When checked on November 5, the White House’s official website continued to list Rubio as secretary of state.

Washington Sun reporters Eric Katz and Akbar Shahid Ahmed, citing ten people familiar with internal conversations, reported that Gor was laying the groundwork for a promotion. Sources told the publication that his name had been discussed for positions including secretary of state and White House chief of staff. Some sources also mentioned a possible appointment as deputy secretary of state. These are anonymous sources’ accounts, not an announced personnel decision.

In response, Gor told the publication he had not discussed taking another job with anyone and had no interest in one. He described Rubio as a friend and as irreplaceable as secretary of state. Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs Dylan Johnson also rejected the report, calling it made-up rumors from anonymous sources. A White House official, whom the newspaper did not identify, backed that denial.

The report also includes a separate clarification concerning Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. One source alleged he had spoken of leaving after the midterms if Republicans lost control of Congress. After publication, Landau told The Washington Sun that he had never told anyone he intended to leave and had no intention of doing so.

Separately, The Independent published speculation from US and British sources that Rubio might leave the administration to pursue a presidential campaign in 2028. Its full report, however, includes opposing assessments: one administration source saw no signs that he wanted to quit, while another suggested he might stay to provide stability. The White House and State Department rejected that report; the department called it baseless in a statement attributed to Johnson.

The Washington Sun attributes the interest in Gor to his direct access to Donald Trump, his previous leadership of the White House personnel office and his participation in diplomatic meetings outside India. The publication says he also serves as US special envoy for South and Central Asia. That political influence provides context for the report about a possible promotion, but does not confirm a change at the helm of US diplomacy.
