“Putin Doesn’t Read Truth Social”: The Energy Ceasefire as Theatre of the Absurd

On October 11, Donald Trump announces an “energy ceasefire” on Truth Social. Zelensky learns about it from the same post. By October 13, Russian missiles hit Thermal Power Plants 4 and 5. A column on the new era of social-media diplomacy — and on Ukraine, cast as the backdrop in a theatre whose script is written without it.

Some still believe that high politics happens in closed rooms, with multi-page memoranda and carefully crafted language. Wrong. In 2026, a single social-media post is enough to “stop a war.” At least on paper.

On October 11, the U.S. president posts a few lines on Truth Social claiming he has brokered an energy ceasefire. No signatures, no verification, no enforcement mechanism. Just “I said so.” And the world obediently pretends this is diplomacy.

The best part of this farce is Kyiv’s reaction. Zelensky, by his own admission, learned about the “ceasefire” from the same post. The president of the country most directly affected gets the news from an open social-media account. Imagine being told your house will no longer be bombed — via a neighbour’s tweet. That’s what “alliance” looks like American-style.

But it gets better.

Russia, apparently, does not follow Truth Social. Or simply decided Trump is not the boss of them. On October 13, two days after the historic post, Russian missiles hit Thermal Power Plant 4. Shortly after, Plant 5. The energy ceasefire lasted exactly as long as it takes to refresh a feed.

And here’s the core absurdity. Everyone pretends this was a genuine peace effort. Trump — that he “tried.” Zelensky — that he is “grateful for the effort.” Putin — that he never promised anything. Meanwhile, Ukrainians are once again without power, without heat, without illusions.

This is not diplomacy. This is political stand-up comedy, with Ukraine cast as the backdrop. We are the scenery against which the big players perform their acts. Nobody asks us, nobody consults us; we are simply notified via social media. And if the Russians don’t read Truth Social — well, that’s our problem.

Sure, one could say: at least there was movement. But the price of such “movement” is destroyed energy infrastructure, dead and wounded, another heating season in jeopardy. Is a single tweet worth all that? For the authors of the tweet — obviously yes. For everyone else — no.

The worst part is the lack of consequences. Trump doesn’t lose face: he “offered peace.” Putin loses nothing: he never signed on. Ukraine loses yet another chance for even a brief respite. And continues to play the role of a prop in a theatre whose script is written without it.

Will anything change after this? Unlikely. Next week there will be a new post, a new “ceasefire,” new strikes. And someone will again say: “Putin doesn’t read Truth Social.”

Funny? More like bitter. Because a wry smile is all that’s left when world leaders play at diplomacy and we pay for their game with our homes and our lives.
