Zhytomyr saves electricity as transport restrictions extend to November 6
Street lighting is being switched to energy-saving mode and traffic lights may go off. Extra buses will continue to replace trams and trolleybuses.
Zhytomyr is restricting electricity consumption: electric public transport is temporarily suspended and street lighting is being switched to energy-saving mode. Zhytomyr Online reported this on November 5, 2026, citing an appeal by the city council. According to the outlet's evening report, trams and trolleybuses will remain off the roads on November 6, with additional municipal buses retained for passengers.

The council attributes the restrictions to significant damage to Ukraine's energy infrastructure from Russian strikes. This was not a new transport suspension beginning on November 5: according to the local outlet, electric transport stopped running on November 3. Suspilne also reported that it did not operate on the morning of November 4.
The following arrangements have been announced for November 6: buses 2 and 3 will follow the corresponding trolleybus routes. Bus 23 is temporarily suspended, with bus 23A operating instead: Sloboda — Selets — Ivana Honty Street — Velyka Berdychivska Street — Shevchenka Street — Universytetska Street, returning along the same route. Other city bus routes will operate unchanged, according to Zhytomyr Online's report citing the council.

Power outages may cause traffic lights to operate intermittently or switch off entirely. Drivers and pedestrians are urged to take particular care and follow road signs and intersection rules. Reduced street lighting makes this warning particularly important in the evening.
Residents are urged to reduce consumption, especially at peak times, by switching off unused appliances and avoiding using high-powered household equipment simultaneously. Businesses are asked to limit decorative and advertising lighting, illuminated facades, signs and electronic displays. This is an appeal to save electricity, not an announcement of a complete citywide blackout.

The November 5 reports do not give a date for trams and trolleybuses to resume service. Passengers should check current timetables on the city's transport portal, rozklad.zt.ua, before travelling.
