The emergency call to 102 came at about 11:00. In their initial statement, police said a man had locked the shop manager in a staff office, from which two shots were subsequently heard. A special police operation was launched in the city.

In an update published at 16:47, police provided further details: officers distracted the man during negotiations, allowing the people being held to run out through a staff exit. Investigators say he then detonated an object resembling a grenade and began firing indiscriminately. KORD officers subsequently detained him.
